Recently a major highway was shut down for several hours, again. Concern flooded the community that another fatality had occurred. Thankfully not. But the incident required significant clean up and inconvenienced drivers for over ten hours, forcing everyone including tractor trailer drivers to squeeze through our small town streets.
As you might imagine, this became the topic of local conversation. One wise woman who had just listened to a monologue of disbelief and frustration over the recent crowded roadways and safety concerns simply said, “The longer I live, the more I remember, this world is not my home. And I am thankful for that!”
She is right. As believers, we know this world is not our home. It is our temporary dwelling place. And as crazy as this world seems to turn, there’s another fact I take comfort in: God determined the time and place in which we would be born. He decided when and where we would live. And, He authored how we should live our days, taking all those facts into account.
While I am sometimes shocked at societal events, and wonder what this world is coming to, I realize I need to take a step back. Talk to Jesus. Rest a while at His feet. Escape the craziness for a time. Take a deep breath and bask in His peace. Psalm 46:10 instructs us to, “Be still and know I am God.”
Then consider what would Jesus do?
He would simply love on people where they are. He would be kind and patient. Speak words of encouragement. Not rush or grow anxious. Not bark orders or spit anger.
But smile. Share peace.
While there may be craziness surrounding us, we don’t have to participate. We can be still and know God is in control.
Do you like me, find that easy to say yet hard to do?
Thankfully, we are not left to our own devices. God is happy to help us when we ask. Let’s ask Him for help with just that.
Prayer: Dear Lord, Thank You for Your promised help. Thank You for I am not left to navigate the daily chaos on my own. Please help me remember to Be still and know You are God. This world is indeed my temporary address. My heart and my peace are found with You. Thank You! In Jesus’ name, amen.
