George told me an incredible story. He explained that once someone had tried to accuse him of an offense that never happened. His lawyer recognized his innocence but advised him to plead guilty to a lesser offence, stating, “it will be easier than trying to prove your innocence.” Well, George prayed over it. John 8:32 kept playing through his mind.
Against the lawyer’s advice, George refused to plead guilty to a lesser offense. He stated the truth and awaited the judge’s verdict.
“Not guilty.” The judge also revealed that he considered the “evidence” against him flimsy at best. George was immensely relieved, but also realized how close he had come to negotiating his charges down to a “lesser crime,” one which he did not commit, over concern for how the trial would go.
The truth can be hard.
When situations seem circumstantial, and truth seems contingent on one’s perspective, it’s a challenge to think anyone would or could believe us.
We often receive messages about world views that would state: how can you be sure? Why would you believe that?
While there are loads of apologetic materials offering logical reasons explaining how truthful Jesus’ life and evidence to His resurrection were, we can also settle on John 8:32.
“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
When we meet Jesus, and then repeatedly meet with Jesus, unloading our hearts and giving Him our burdens, He sets us free.
Free from confusion, wandering, and sorrow.
Feelings of freedom emerge and while our circumstances may not change, our unburdened hearts realize that somehow, some way, in the end, everything will be alright.
Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Light.”
Knowing the truth (Jesus) and telling the truth (What is true), will set us free. Free from being consumed by everyday burdens, and freedom from committing or compounding sin.
John 8:32 is a short, simple verse. But there is nothing simplistic about the truth. Nothing simplistic about Jesus and His love for us.
Jesus is the Truth. And He will set us free.
If you are like me, you might need that reminder as we deal with some of the tougher realities of living in this world. Will you join me in prayer for just that?
Prayer: Dear Lord, Sometimes I encounter people or situations that want something other than the truth. Sometimes they try to make it seem that less than the truth would benefit me. Please help me stand firmly on the truth. Remind me to ask for help from You: the Way, the Truth, and the Life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
